What are the Bass Earbuds?

It is commonthat we use the term ‘bass’ so often. However, most people who use it don’treally know what bass really means. Let’s explainwhat bass actually means. Term ‘bass’ is related to the audio frequency. We,humans, have the ability to register tones that fit in the frequency range from20 Hz to 20 kHz. Now, there aredifferent segments of sound in that same frequency ranges: Sub frequency:20-60 HzLow frequency:60-250 HzLower-midfrequency: 250 Hz-1 kHzHigher-midfrequency: 1-4 kHzHigh frequency:4-20 kHz What we call‘bass’ is situated in the sub and low frequency. It is made by generating thevibration caused by objects with low density. For instance, you make a basseffect every time you hit a drum since it is made that way to produce low-endvibrations.

What is Impedance

Okay, let's start with a basic definition ofimpedance. We should first think about electrical resistance (represented byR), measured in Ohms (symbol Ω). Imagine a simple circuit consisting of abattery and a resistor. The battery generates a voltage which tries to force acurrent around the circuit connected between the battery's two terminals. Theresistor resists that current — the higher the value of the resistor, the lowerthe current will be, and vice versa. In resisting the current, a voltagedifference is developed across the resistor. This important phenomenon isdefined mathematically in Ohm's Law, where the battery voltage (represented byV and measured in Volts) equals the current (represented by I and measured inAmps) multiplied by the resistor's resistance value. Expressing this lawalgebraically, V=IR, a simple bit of algebraic rearrangement gives I=V/R. So ifthe battery is 12V and the resistor is 120Ω, the current flowing around thecircuit will be 12V/120Ω, which is 0.1A, or 100mA. This simple example is of a Direct Current (DC)circuit — the battery voltage is steady and unchanging (ignoring the effect ofthe battery losing energy over time). However, when we are dealing with audioelectronics, the signal voltage changes amplitude continuously to represent thechanging amplitude of the audio signal, and it alternates between positive andnegative cycles. The currents that flow therefore have varying amplitudes andalternate in direction as well, and we have what is known generically as anAlternating Current (AC) circuit. This is where things become slightly morecomplex, because, in addition to the resistance, there are two otherfundamental components which affect the current flowing around an AC circuit. In addition to the simple resistance we have already discussed, there is alsocapacitance and inductance to consider. In simplistic terms these also act likeresistors, except that their resistance to current changes in proportion to thefrequency of the signal voltage fluctuations — the rate at which the currentflowing through the circuit is made to change direction by the audio signalvoltage, in this case. All audio electronics have combinations ofresistors, capacitors and inductors connected in circuits, along with 'active'components like transistors or valves which provide amplification or act asswitches. To make life slightly easier for ourselves, we often consider thetotal 'resistance' of a complex circuit involving resistors, capacitors andinductors as a composite lump, and that's what we call the impedance. Impedance has the symbol Z — hence referencesto high-Z inputs, for example — and is still measured in Ohms. However, theactual value depends to some degree on the frequency of the signal voltagesinvolved. In audio input and output circuits the impedances are principallyresistive to make interconnection easier — the impedance won't change too muchover the range of audio frequencies. However, the impedance to radio frequency(RF) signals will often be very different to that at audio frequencies in orderto keep RF interference out. Because the unit of impedance is ohm, manyfriends think that the impedance of the earphone is the resistance of the coil, which is actually wrong. Impedance refers to the obstruction of alternatingcurrent in a circuit with resistance, inductance, and capacitance, and the unitis ohm. There is no particular absolute correlation between the impedance andthe sound quality of the headphones. It is not that the sound quality of acertain earphone is good, and it is expensive because of the high impedance. Since a low impedance is enough, why do youhave so many headphones with large impedance? Although the impedance does notdirectly reflect the sound quality, high-impedance headphones do have someadvantages in terms of sound field and level. Of course, high-impedanceheadphones also need more power amplifier support, generally desktop systemscan be driven by multi-stage amplification.Since a low impedance is enough, why do youhave so many headphones with large impedance? Of course, high-impedanceheadphones also need more power amplifier support, generally desktop systemscan be driven by multi-stage amplification. If you listen to songs on your mobile phone orportable player, try to choose headphones with low impedance and highsensitivity when choosing headphones. Usually the impedance of the earphones inthe 16 or 32 ohms is very good.

What's sensitivity?

Itis the sound pressure level produced by the earphone in the artificial ear(dummy head) when the electric power is applied to the earphone at 1 mW. Thepower of 1 mW is calculated based on the standard impedance of the earphone ata frequency of 1KHz. The unit of sensitivity is dB/mW, and the other one thatis not commonly used is dB/Vrms, which is the sound pressure level produced bythe 1Vrms voltage applied to the headphones.  Highsensitivity means that the power required to reach a certain sound pressurelevel. Now the sensitivity of dynamic headphones is generally above 90dB/mW. Ifit is for the Walkman, the sensitivity is preferably around 100dB/mW or higher.  Themost intuitive performance of this parameter is: two pairs of headphones, theimpedance is 32Ω, a pair of sensitivity is 120dB, a pair of sensitivity is100dB, the sensitivity is 120, the louder the sound.

How to Clean Headphones and Earbuds - A Step by Step Guide

by suki.wang@dgbosta.com  Oct.6 2016Headphones orearbuds have become an incredibly useful and indispensable part of our dailylives. Long rides or long waits have become much more bearable with them. However, it' s paramount that you have clean headphones. If not forhygienic reasons, clean headphones last much longer and are less prone tobreaking down and experiencing malfunctions. To avoid this unpleasantoccurrence, you need to know how to clean headphones and earbuds. If you've nevertried to accomplish this, now is the right moment. Although it requiresprecision and patience, cleaning your earbuds and headphones is beneficial forboth the lifespan and the sound quality of your ear gear. In this simpleguide, we've decided to highlight the things you need to buy, to do and toexecute. Cleaning your own headphones is definitely a skill you should possess.Let's dig in.  Why do we cleanour headphones? We always tendto change our clothes after a workout or after a long day – to clean them. Butwe never do this with headphones. After months oreven years of use, headphones and earbuds can have dust, grease, earwax anddead skin cells trapped in the little cracks and crevices. This does sounddisgusting, but it can get even more repulsive when you get an ear infection. This is why clean earbuds are important to have. Dirty ones are a safe havenfor bacteria waiting to crawl into your ears. However, there'smore. Producers and others musicians alike need to have almost perfect soundclarity in their headphones. Having dirty earbuds or studio headphones isdetrimental to their work. Even casuallisteners see their headgear start malfunctioning after as much as a year!Earwax, dust and other substances cause the earbuds and headphones to stopworking. This is why we clean them.  What do I needto clean them?Believe it ornot, you don't need any high-end cleaning supplies or magic substances. Thingsthat you will use to clean your headphones and earbuds are found in about everyhome. Here are the things you will have to have by your side: Detergent ordish soap– any kind or aroma will do, it doesn’t really matterWarm water– makessure it's warm, not overly hot as it can damage the electronics, rubber, andplasticSoft cloth– it'sused for soaking in any excess drops of water from the cleaning processAn oldtoothbrush and cotton earbuds– toothbrushes are ideal for bigger components, whereas earbud should be used for buds and smaller electrical componentsSmall towel– forplacing the cleaned components to dry outPaper towels–for rubbing all the necessary partsRubbing alcohol– to kill any dirt that won't go away easily Cleaning yourheadphones – the how toWhat most of youmay notice is that headphones are indeed bigger than earbuds. That means theyare less delicate, but you still have to be cautious. Every model is meant tobe taken apart. In some cases, you may receive a cleaning instruction manualwith the product. If you did, follow it. If not, follow this guide, and yourheadphones will be clean again. 1) Cleaning theear tips and padsStep 1- Thefirst thing you have to do is damper a small cloth with soap and warm water. After taking out the ear pads, gently rub them until you see the cloth iscovered in dust or minimal amounts of dirt.Step 2– Next up,you just need to wipe firmly with a dry cloth. This is to ensure that you'veremoved any excess earwax.Step 3– Userubbing alcohol to rub the insides of the pads and rub them together. By doingthis, any remaining debris, bacteria or dirt will fall off due to the kineticenergy combined with a strong disinfectant in alcohol.2) Cleaning theheadbandStep 1– Cleaningthe headband of your headphones is not a complicated process. The first thingyou have to do is gently remove the left and right sides for the band. Makesure it's completely free from any connection to other components.Step 2– Take acloth and put only a little bit of rubbing alcohol. That way, you will be ableto rub off any dirt or debris. Knowing how to clean headphones is easy, buttakes a little bit of patience. Thus, you should patiently rub all parts, especially the ones that spend the most time in your hair.Step 3– Leaveout on a towel to dry. If you're extra cautious, you can repeat the processwith a small amount of water or rubbing alcohol again.3) Cleaning themesh screensStep 1– Now,mesh screens can be considered the most complex part of every headphone set. They are the last “line of defense” between the ear pads and the actualelectronics inside. To clean them, you have to gently remove the headband andthe ear pads.Step 2– Uponremoving all other parts, take a Q-tip and put it a small amount of rubbingalcohol. Then, proceed to rub the tip all over the bars of the mesh screens.Make sure your movements are cautious and easy.Step 3– Coverthe corners and other not-so-easily reachable parts of the screens. They arethe ones that collect the most dirt.Step 4– Upontaking care of the mesh screens; rub them with a gentle dry cloth. Leave themto soak in the sunlight. If the atmosphere is too damp, don' t take them out,as they' ll soak in the moisture.⚠ WARNING - What toavoid when cleaning your headphonesThe theme whenlearning how to clean your headphones is never overdoing it.  A beginner's mistake is putting either toomuch water or alcohol on a Q-tip or cloth. Such an action can severely damagethe electronics and exacerbate the sound quality. Be especially careful withmesh screens and always leave them to dry out completely.  Cleaning yourearbuds – the how toAlthough earbudsare smaller than headphones, that doesn't mean they're all that difficult toclean. You only have to pay attention to two parts – the driver unit and theear tips. Thankfully, the mesh screens are much smaller and easier to clean. 1) Cleaning thedriver unitStep 1– Removethe ear tips. They will only create confusion and make it harder to reach someof the less accessible areas of your earbuds. There is no more deconstructionto be done.Step 2– Hold theearphones with the mesh side facing in a downwards direction. Take your oldtoothbrush and gently scrub the wire mesh to dislodge any wax or dirt. Sincethe wires are flexible, the hairs on your toothbrush will have no problemcleaning the sound pathwaysStep 3– Tap thedriver unit several times to make sure everything unwanted has fallen off.Step 4– Now thatthe wire mesh is clean, you only have to focus on the concaves and crevices ofthe rest of the driver body. Make a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water anddip a Q-tip in it. Take care of every single crevice.Step 5– Rub thealcohol-affected areas with a soft cloth dipped in warm water.Step 6– Leavethe driver unit on a towel and leave it out to try for at least 3 hours. Checkon a 30-minute basis.2) Cleaning theear tipsEvery pair ofearbuds and earphones comes with detachable silicone/rubber ear tips. They aremade for removal but host the most dirt, earwax, and other unwanted debris. Youneed to focus on them especially. Step 1– Removethe tips by slowly pulling on them with one hand, while the other holds thedriver unit.Step 2– Use aQ-tip dipped in an alcohol-water solution to remove any solid debris. Repeatthis action several times before everything is completely gone.Step 3– Dip thesilicone ear tips into soapy warm water and leave them there for around 4-5minutes.Step 4– Uponremoving the tips from the soapy water, wipe them thoroughly and leave them todry out on paper towels. ⚠ WARNING – What toavoid when cleaning your earphonesTechnically, eartips are meant to be removed and replaced with new ones every once in a while. Therefore, it would be only right if you had 2-3 spare ones. You can get themwith a newly-bought pair of earbuds. Don't overdo with soap and be careful notto break the wire mesh when using a toothbrush to clean it. Cleaning yourheadgear is an investment for the future. Knowing how to clean headphones andearbuds is paramount if you want them to sound better and last longer. It's asimple process once you analyze it for some time. The only thingyou need to watch out for is to be thorough, as well as prevent too much liquidfrom covering the driver unit, as well as the mesh screens. Appliance storescharge a fortune to clean them and you don't have to oblige to their rates.Having clean earbuds and headphones is something you can accomplish on yourown.

How To Make Headphones More Comfortable?

Exemplary noise reduction and clearer audiomean little, if headphones are uncomfortable. So, you need to learn how to makeheadphones more comfortable to enjoy the game or music. We have the best hacksfor the major comfort issues you may encounter with your headphones. As your voiceover work or gaming increases, you may find yourself spending many hours at a time under headsets. The lastthing you want is to have sore ears or a headache caused by uncomfortableheadphones. InspectThem to Pinpoint the ProblemThe very first thing that you can do toensure superior comfort is to buy a product that is highly comfortable. Everypair of headsets is different. This simply means every pair comes with its ownunique discomforts. In light of this, it goes without saying thatyou need to inspect your set to establish where the pain is originating fromand why. The cause can be anything from tight clamping force, uncomfortableheadband, or cheaply made padding. How did the inspection go? Did you findsome serious design issues with your headphones? Fear not, I have a number ofsolutions prepared for you for the common problems you have found.  TheHeadphone Clamp Too TightHeadphones are made to fit a largerpercentage of the general public. However, people are different, and theclamping force may not be perceived the same by different people. What you mayconsider cozy fitting may actually be too tight for someone else. No matter how nice-looking the headsetsappear aesthetically, they won't do you any good if they cause significantpressure points. While most headsets will break-in withcontinued use, there are some cases when you will have to help with theprocess. A common fix is DIY stretching to make headphones loose. You can use astack of books or a box.For textbook results, you should use astack of books or a box that is slightly wider than your head. It' s simplephysics really. If you stretch your headphones beyond the width of your head, then they are going to be more comfortable. Before you stretch your headsets beyondtheir limit and finally break them, you should be careful of a few things. Theymust be of decent quality, since there are pretty cheap headsets available inthe market that will easily break if you attempt to stretch them. Be slow, don' t be in a hurry to stretchthe set too much, they may break even if they are of decent quality.  TheHeadphone is So Heavy that Presses HeadThis is a common problem with circumauralheadphones. They have a ring-shaped muff that rests on the head around the earand not actually on the ear. The enclosure around the muff is closed or solid. These headphones are probably the mostcommon, as they usually provide a full bass sound and minimize outside noisebetter than other styles. They are less likely to leak sound, but they areoften heavier and more cumbersome. To lessen the pressure and discomfortexerted on your head from the excess weight, you need more ergonomic headbanddesign. Begin by stretching the headband to reduce the clamping force. Thiswill help to ease the pressure exerted on your head. Then, add extra cushioning to the headband, order additional cushioning as a sort out part from the manufacturer, andVelcro the cushioning onto your headsets. This will improve comfort and providethe look and sound you like.  TheHeadphones are Very Hot After Wearing a Long TimeThis is in fact one of the commonest issueswith on-ear or over-ear headphones. The padding on most of these devices ismade of foam covered in fake plastic leather. All of which do not allow yourskin to breathe properly. It is surely not a major concern, but itbothers more people than I can count. In my view, it is a common enough problemthat needs fixing. Yet, manufacturers do not seem to take notice, and so theykeep on producing headsets with ear cups that blow your ears with hotness. The best fix for this problem is simple;find more breathable, softer velour ear pads. Most manufacturers designlow-cost third-party pads for widely held models. All you have to do is conductan Amazon search to find the ideal pair for your model. The only problem is that you cannot makethe ear pads more comfortable without sacrificing bass and isolation.  Glassand Headphones Don' t MixIf you are a headphone user who wearsglasses, then you know exactly what it' s like to have the size of your glassesdigging into the side of your head. There is always a super painful experience, especially over a long gaming or music listening session. It’s true that glass and headsets don’tmix, but there is a way that you can make headphones comfortable with glass. The fix to this problem is to buy headphones with removable or softer ear cups. Look for ear cup replacements that are madeof faux velour with a sort of very velvety feel to them. Such ear cups willcontour to the shape of your glass temples. This will surely add the muchcomfort you need with your glasses on. Another simple yet expensive hack is tosacrifice the structural integrity of your headsets by cutting the shape ofyour entire frame on the ear pads. If you are worried about damaging yourheadsets, you should first try out this hack with cheaper replacement pads. You can also opt for thinner glass frames. This simply means that the part of the frame that is pressed against your scalpis much smaller. This would ultimately help to ease any pressure on your earcartilage and temporal bone.   TheDrivers Press against EarsThe clamping force does need to be too muchfor the drivers to press against your ears. If your headphone model is equippedwith shallow ear cups, they are likely to press on your ears, causing pressurepoints and pain. The most reliable fix for this problem isfor you to deepen the ear pads. The only problem is that this solution mayinterfere with sound quality. You can deepen the cups by stuffing themwith foam material in a circular manner. This will certainly improve thepadding thickness, providing more room for your ears to be comfortable. Ihighly recommend backer rod, it' s cheap and easy to use   InConclusionIn my experience, you can easily makeheadphones more comfortable if you know how. The very first thing to do is buyheadsets that provide you with your desired comfort. You have to try them onbefore making a purchase. Like human faces that appear similar, butdifferent in contours, sizes, and shapes, headphones also display uniquevariations in details. What seems comfortable for you may not be for someoneelse. The aforementioned hacks are what you need to improve your customizedcomfort.
